A wildlife garden has been created at a Prestatyn school thanks to a homebuilder rooting itself in the local community.
Ysgol Gronant is less than two miles from Sŵn y Môr, a Castle Green Homes development taking shape on Gronant Road.
The school successfully applied for Mission Green funding offered to good causes in the area supporting the environment and wellbeing.
Miss Roberts, class teacher at Ysgol Gronant said: “We applied to Mission Green for funding because we wanted to develop our outdoor area to promote wildlife and the visiting of wildlife. The project will help educate the children about different environments and animals and birds. It also creates opportunities for them to work in the outdoors, setting up the garden and then maintaining and developing it over time. The garden and resources give the children the opportunity to monitor and record wildlife visiting the area, which feeds into curriculum work. Along with the educational benefit, it also supports their mental health and wellbeing.”
Ysgol Gronant was one of 11 good causes to receive Mission Green Prestatyn funding. It used its £630 grant to purchase wildlife habitats including bird boxes, feeders and a bird bath; wildlife cameras; identification charts, signage and books; bird food; wildflower garden seeds and compost.
Castle Green Homes sales director Sian Pitt said: “The wildlife garden at Ysgol Gronant ticks all of the boxes for a Mission Green grant as it supports the natural environment while also boosting children’s health and wellbeing. We’re pleased to have been able to help the school provide homes for nature, while teaching children about the birds, bugs and other animals living around them.”
The other local projects to receive Mission Green funding were Big Pool Wood volunteers, Cosy Craft Club, Denbighshire Play Rangers, Fins Swim School, Friends of Coronation Gardens, Hedgehog Help Prestatyn, Helping Homeless North Wales, Little Explorers and Friends, Ysgol Clawdd Offa and Prestatyn in Bloom.
The Mission Green funding is in addition to the community investment Castle Green will make under a Section 106 agreement signed during the planning process.
