Children from Abermorddu Primary School took part in the STEM Racing National Finals backed by Castle Green Homes.
Teacher Daniel Williams explained: “STEM racing is a fantastic project that develops young engineers, allowing them to see how their passion and hard work can lead them to working in the car industry or similar in the future. We were excited to have three teams go forward for the national finals among 70 teams and are awaiting the final standings.
“As part of the competition pupils are required to gain sponsorship from local businesses and we’re thankful to Castle Green Homes for believing in our vision and investing in the future of STEM. With the funding from Castle Green we were able to use CAD to refine the final designs as for our cars that held up perfectly under the pressure of national-level scrutiny. Our team stood out during the pit displays and verbal presentations, thanks to the professional branding and equipment Castle Green’s funding provided.”
The experience helps children develop a variety of valuable life skills including teamwork, literacy and numeracy.
The competition sees children work in teams to design, develop, and race miniature cars, managing every aspect of their project.
Year five and six pupils from Abermorddu Primary School took part in an in-house competition to select the teams who’d be put forward for the North Wales regional contest involving around 30 teams.
They secured second, fourth and fifth place at regional level, putting them through to the national finals.

“It supports literacy skills from constant discussion amongst the teams, writing formal sponsorship letters and presenting their journey to STEM Racing judges,” Daniel explained. “Pupils also develop their numeracy skills as they have to create and follow a budget, along with following specific design specifications for their STEM Racing car.”
Castle Green provided £300 sponsorship to the STEM Racing teams at Abermorddu Primary School, which is close to its Maes y Castell development on Wrexham Road.
The donation is in addition to £5,000 being shared among the local community under the voluntary Mission Green initiative and statutory Section 106 contributions agreed during the planning process to support the growth of the neighbourhood.
Castle Green Homes sales director Sian Pitt said: “As good neighbours we were happy to be able to help Abermorddu Primary School’s STEM Racing teams. It’s great to see the children learning new skills and competing on the national stage. Hopefully the experience will encourage some of them to consider future careers in engineering.”
For those who want to engineer a move to a new home in Abermorddu, Maes y Castell offers a choice of two to four-bedroom properties, currently being sold off plan. The sales centre is open Thursday to Monday from 10am to 5pm. To learn more see here.
