Help to Buy

How does Help to Buy England work?

All buyers can apply for a government-backed equity loan of up to 20% on all new properties (up to £600,000) ensuring you only need a 5% deposit. With a 25% contribution towards your new home, you have access to a wider range of mortgage deals with lower monthly payments. Visit for more information.

Help to Buy: ISA

If you are saving for a deposit, it makes sense to open a Help to Buy: ISA as you could receive a bonus of up to £3,000 to boost your savings.

For every £200 you deposit in the account, the government will provide a bonus of £50 up to a maximum of £3,000.

The Help to Buy: ISA account is available from a range of banks, building societies and credit unions, and you can deposit a lump sum of up to £1,200 to kickstart your account.

Accounts are available for individual first-time buyers, so you and your partner can open separate accounts and claim bonuses each, up to a maximum of £6,000.

You can save up to £200 per month, so if you can save more than this, you will need an additional savings account to do so.

Claiming your Government bonus

When it comes to buying your home, your solicitor will apply for your government bonus on your behalf. The funds will then be used at the completion of the property transaction. The bonus cannot be used for the deposit due at the exchange of contracts or to pay for your solicitor, estate agent or other fees involved with buying a home.

You can calculate the bonus you can expect on the government Help to Buy website.

*Help to Buy is available on all homes, with a purchase price up to £600,000, subject to status and affordability criteria, terms and conditions apply.

The Help to Buy scheme is subject to availability and may be withdrawn at any time without notice. Not to be used in conjunction with any other offer.

**Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on a mortgage or any other debt secured on it
